Things to do with kids in San Francisco

Our San Leandro hotel is near a variety of attractions, activities, and restaurants to enjoy during your stay whether you’re traveling on business or with the family. There’s no shortage of things to do with kids in San Francisco and the surrounding area and we’ve outlined some of our favorite family-friendly activities below.

Nestled in the 525-acre Knowland Park in the Oakland Hills, the zoo houses more than 400 native and exotic animals. The exhibits are organized geographically and reflect the ecosystems of the animals' native habitats. Kids will love the "rides area," with a roller coaster, an "endangered species carousel," and a train. Open daily 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (11.8 miles)

Complete with a recreation area to relax and have fun in, the San Francisco Zoo is a center for wildlife that provides exemplary care for over 1,000 rare, endangered, and rescued species. Browse exhibits, interact with animals and learn about conservation during your next visit. Open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (21.8 miles)

Golden Gate Park is a vast playground, which covers more than 1,000 acres of land. The park ranges more than 50 city blocks in San Francisco's downtown and is home to the world-renown California Academy of Sciences, the tranquil Japanese Tea Gardens, and the oldest glass and wood Victorian greenhouse in the western hemisphere which houses more than 800 live butterflies and over 10,000 plants. The park is filled with many groves and peaceful gardens to take walks in, as well as many fun sites to see. Open daily 5 a.m. – 12 a.m. (22.1 miles)

The 86,000-square-foot center houses the largest public telescope in the United States, a 230-seat planetarium, and the large-screen Tien MegaDome Theater. There are also numerous hands-on science and technology exhibits. Open Wednesday & Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday & Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (18.8 miles)

Surrounded by acres of landscaped greenery, this museum is devoted to the arts, environment, and history of California. Open Wednesday & Thursday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 a.m. (10.4 miles)


The California Academy of Sciences is a world-class scientific and cultural institution which recently opened a new facility in Golden Gate Park, a 400,000 square foot structure that houses an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and a 4-story rainforest all under one roof. Open daily 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (25.3 miles)

The Exploratorium

This interactive museum is fun and interesting for every member of the family. With a mission of developing the way the world learns, The Exploratorium presents how the world works in a playful and innovative way. Thought-provoking exhibits featuring everything from astronomic theories to food science, culture and so much more at this unique destination. (20.9 miles)

The aquarium on Fisherman’s Wharf at Pier 39 has a 50,000 square foot building that showcases animals native to San Francisco Bay. Interact with some of the earth’s gentlest creatures in the facility’s “splash zone” after walking under and through tunnels surrounded by water and 20,000 animals. (21.7 miles)

This interactive space helps develop children’s creative confidence with exhibits and programs for kids and families. A multimedia environment encourages imagination that is facilitated by skilled artists and educators at every turn. Open Tuesday – Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (20.4 miles)

Spend the day exploring nature on trails and in botanical gardens alongside many other activities of one of the Bay Area’s favorite parks. Bring a picnic, go swimming, walk the trails, feed animals at the Little Farm, step inside the Environmental Education Center that features weekly programs, ride the carousel, play golf and more. Open daily 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (21.2 miles)
